Scholastic Bowl:Regional Competition Nears
The John
I. Burton Scholastic Bowl team's season reaches its peak as it prepares to compete against the best eight teams in
the Western half of the state at the Regional 1A West competition in Radford, Virginia on February
1, 2014. I interviewed one of the team’s coaches, Coach Sharpe, to find out
more.
Coach Eddie Sharpe has been coaching an academic's team for 15 years and has been coaching the Scholastic Bowl team for three years. Sharpe states that the reason he became interested
in coaching was because of the quality of the players. He says the kids on his
team are some of the: “best kids we have."
I asked
Sharpe about how he prepared for the matches, and he said that the only way to
really prepare is to study, study, and study more. He says, “They study a little
of everything and more than just the SOL criteria. It goes past that.”
The JIB Scholastic Bowl Team has had an extraordinary season. Their record was 29-5 and out of these 5 losses the Honaker Tigers were 4 of them -- the Tigers are the number one team in the state. Brittney R. scored the most points this season with over 6,000. Wow! Sharpe believes that the students will do well at the Regional competition.
I spoke with some students who are on the team and asked them why they decided to join. They said that the reason they join is because they wish to further their education in an extra curricular activity and to participate in a fun and competitive activity. I also asked what makes the students so dedicated? They told me that its all about team support. You don't ever want to let your team down.

Raiders Steal One
A very intense game was played on January 24th at Lee High School. This was one of the craziest wins for John I. Burton. At start of the game it was very frustrating to watch. In the first half, Lee High took the lead and did not give it up. Any production by the Raiders was immediately answered back. The Generals entered halftime with an eight point lead.
The start of the second half wasn't easy to watch either. The Generals answered nearly every shot our Raiders made. But nearing the end of the fourth quarter our Raiders played amazingly. The Raiders answered any shots the Generals made and cut the lead down to four with slightly less than a minute left. Tra A. was subbed into the game and hit a clutch three pointer to cut the lead down to one. Lee High managed to waste a lot of time before getting fouled and made one free throw. With nine seconds left, Ervin B. took the ball up the floor, nearly lost possession, then hit a buzzer beater two to send the game to overtime.
Overtime was very intense for both teams. Raiders hit a three pointer to get an early on lead, but Generals easily answered and gained a one point lead with nine seconds left on the clock yet again. Ervin B. took the ball up the floor, drew three defenders, then passed the ball to Kevin V. who hit the game winning three. The final score was: 64 Raiders - 62 Generals.
Ervin B. played outstanding this game. He did a great job on defense and did well keeping his team in the game when Lee High was hitting shots. Austin J. and Alex K. stepped up as well when the Generals started guarding Ervin B. intensely.

Burton Blows out Rye Cove
On Friday, January 17 an amazing game was played by the Raiders. The Eagles had an 8-4 lead very early in the game. But from that point forward, the Raiders dominated. Our John I. Burton players got the lead to 19 by halftime, and finished the game with a score of 82-47.
The Raiders played incredibly as a team. Excellent offensive execution and very
intense defense were combined to stop the Eagles from flying. Together the
Raiders shot 50 percent on field goals and 62 percent on three point field
goals. They also dominated down low by
stopping most of the Eagles offense, grabbing 35 rebounds, and scoring well on
offense.
Austin J. led the team with a season high 19 points. He empowered the team by hitting back to back
three pointers when we were down early in the game. Austin played excellent defense and shot very
well.

Burton Tops Twin Springs
On January 14, 2014 at John I. Burton High School, a
basketball game was played between the John I. Burton Raiders and the Twin
Springs Titans.
At the start of the game it seemed like our John I. Burton Raiders
would blow out the Twin Spring Titans because our Raiders held a double digit
lead heading into the second half. Then, early third quarter the Titans fought
back and cut the lead down to four. For a while, both teams answered back to any
shot made by the other team. But eventually, the Titans tired out and our
Raiders got a fifteen point lead and did not let the Titans come back.
Defense was amazing for most of the game. Our starters and bench
players played intense and aggressive defense, forcing the Titans to take tough
shots. Offense was great too. Solid execution on plays along with great ball movement
defined the game. Nelson T., Ervin B., and Alex K. scored double digits
in this game.
Nelson T. led the team with a season high 17 points. He
grabbed many rebounds when needed, and gave us a strong inside presence. Nelson
also avoided foul trouble this game, and he did a great job at forcing people
to take tough shots down low.
